3 Essential Oils for Immune Health

Can you use Essential Oils to help BOOST your immune system?

The simple answer is: YES

Will they prevent a virus or a disease? No.

In today's Pandemic Focused world, where every day the news reporters are discussing new record breaking Covid numbers, new variants and encouraging everyone to get a vaccine*, here is some information which may be interesting to you.

*Side note: I believe everyone should do what is right for THEIR system. To vax or not is a personal choice and in my opinion, should be made based upon one's own immune system, exposure to those who are vulnerable and those whom it may endanger. This is NOT the place to discuss pro or against vax. I truly don't care what you chose. I chose to. That doesn't make it right or wrong for you. It made it right for me, my system, and my world.

Now, onto more entertaining and interesting information :)

Antimicrobials

Depending on the essential oils biochemical reaction that occur within each bacterial cell determines how effective these oils will be. Since EO's are lipophilic (dissolve in fat) they can easily penetrate bacterial cell membranes and disrupt the process of synthesis in structural molecules.

  • Cinnamon

  • Clove

  • Eucalyptus

  • Garlic

  • Ginger

  • Oregano

  • Thyme

Antivirals

Certain EOs might interfere with the viral protective layer of a virus, inhibiting the virus from replicating and disrupting other key functions.

  • Eucalyptus oil

  • Tea tree oil

  • Thyme oil

May be oils which help combat the rhinovirus that causes the flu.

Other oils which may be helpful in supporting your immune system are:

Clove Oil

Clove oil has shown is has immune-supportive properties including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant and antifungal actions

The main components of clove essential oil are phenylpropanoids, which include carvacrol, thymol, eugenol, and cinnamaldehyde. These and other compounds found in clove EO, such as terpenes and flavonoids, have demonstrated immune-supportive capabilities.

In one study, it was found that mice who had been immunized with blood cells from another animal had important functions of their immune system stimulated and restored when clove oil was used.

Perhaps, diffusing clove oil after a vaccine would be helpful? I don't know. Just a thought here.

Eucalyptus Oil

Slathering that Vick's on the bottom of your feet, under your nose and on your chest as a kid actually has a good reason!

The EO of eucalyptus has immuno-supportive capabilities such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties.

In a study done, it was found that Escherichia coli (bacteria involved in UTI infections and diarrhea) and Staphylococcus aureus (bacteria involved with serious skin infections) are also found in pneumonia, endocarditis (infection of the heart values) and bone infections.

When eucalyptus EO was used, it was determined that the EO activated the innate immune cells to destroy microbial pathogens and apoptotic cells.

What does that mean in layman's terms? It helped kill the bacteria which were causing the infection at a significant rate.

Seeing how Covid seems to lead to pneumonia in those who are vulnerable, having some eucalyptus oil, shower bombs and even some good ole'fashion Vicks Vapo Rub may prove helpful to relieve some symptoms and help kill the bacteria.

Oregano Oil

This oil has shown it's immuno-supportive abilities including antimicrobial, antifungal, antiparasitic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects time and time again.

It has been found as a useful antifungal ingredient against CAndida glabrata, a common strain of yeast present in humans which may cause a fungal infection for some people, especially those who have a lowered immune system-and who does Covid hit worst? Those with a lowered immune system. :(

Oregano EO may reduce the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (proteins involved in inflammatory and neuropathic pain) and help encourage the expression of inflammatory genes.

In other words, diffuse, inhale, even eat more Italian food with oregano to help boost your immune system. Who would have thought homemade pasta sauce could do so much good? Pass the spaghetti and meatballs...
